What is Permaculture?

I see Permaculture design as framework which can help us to design our lives to be more efficient and practical and more in tune with our surroundings. The permaculture approach teaches us some basic and essential common sense living skills. We can apply it to many cultures & contexts, Home, Landscape, Intra and Inter- personal, Farming Economics and more. Most importantly permaculture design can be a tool to help us move from dreaming to doing, empowering us with skills to creatively take responsibilities for our own lives.

We recognise that we are connected –  trees, people, water, & all other elements, in a 'web of life' which supports us all. Imagine a honey bee going about her business, collecting nectar & pollen from flowering plants, simply  by living out her life she takes what she needs & contributes to pollination & reproduction of many plants & trees. Permaculture investigates how we humans can also live our lives to the fullest & play a beneficial part in the web of life.  It is a solutions based approach, one which focuses on creating regenerative, rather than degenerative ways of living for us humans.

What could offer a more compelling investigation?  As Bill Mollisson says 'the yield is potentially unlimited', only determined by our imagination. Permaculture is a constantly evolving system - just like nature. Whilst we use and value many traditions and skills from the past, Permaculture also offers us tools for creative innovation now & into the future & this is what makes it a realistic way of life. Yes it is radical! There are challenges! And there are solutions! It is a fun, proactive, refreshing, practical and empowering approach to life.

What other people say....

Bill Mollisson.."the conscious design and maintenence of agriculturally productive ecosystems, which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way..
Permaculture design is a system of assembling conceptual, material, and strategic components in a pattern which functions to benefit life in all it's forms."

David Holmgren..."Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs."

Permaculture is a way of designing & creating practical ways to fulfill all aspects of human needs in ways that care for the us, our surroundings & other species.

It's about thorough observation, and working in harmony with natural systems & patterns,

"It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.." -Bill Mollisson

This website documents & evaluates 10 of my permaculture design projects to form my Diploma in Applied Permaculture Design.
