Living Permaculture
Adventures in designing for Earth care, People care & Fairshares
Diploma Criteria
The criteria for being awarded a the diploma is very thorough, It is based around developing the design skills of the apprentice through a series of intentional design projects using permaculture ethics & principles. Equally it is essential to demonstrate how the apprentice integrates permaculture into their own life.
For full details of the diploma & criteria you can visit the website of the Permaculture Association Britain.

Assessment Criteria Summary Sheet for my Permaculture Diploma
From the handbook: "Take the headings on the assessment criteria sheet & under each one write a short paragragh outlining how you have met the criteria through your time practising permaculture & where this is cross referenced in the designs you have submited"
1: Completing a PDC & having a current membership with the PAB
-PDC: February 2009 at Monkton Wyld Court with Aranya, & Chris Evans of Designed Visions.
-Current Permaculture Association Membership Number: 1890
2: Demonstrating design skills:
-Documentation for 10 designs & overall portfolio online at http://livingpermaculture.wix.com/livingpermaculture
-A summary sheet for each of the designs showing which of the assessment criteria it meets - this is it!!
-A summary sheet for all ten designs showing the frameworks & methods used which is here -
3: Applying Permaculture in my own life:
-Evidenced by design work within my portfolio:
-
Interior Design: Changes in my own post-diploma life, to create a harmony between inner truth & outer action. Zones 0, going deep into my centre to make changes which will reflect in my continued work in the other zones. Changes in mindset, attitude, habits, health & action. People Care, Pattern to detail, Energy efficient planning,
-
Perrennial Dimension: A detailed 'layer plan' of my 'Food Garden' which is so important to me that it deserved two designs! The garden will provide much more year round food – fruit, nuts, herbs, greens, tubers, & other materials, for my family & possibly even some surplus for sale/exchange/gift. Earth care, People Care, Energy efficient Planning,
-
Food Garden: Completely redesigned the 'vegetable garden' at my family's home. Earth Care, Obtain a yield.
In this way we can be more dependant on our own produce, therby lessening the need for income to buy organic vegetables People care, Energy efficient planning,
-
Action Learning Pathway: I made changes to the way I work, to be more effective by developing action plans, & schedules which included self-care. I chose designs that would give me the opportunity to work on my own projects such as the 2 garden designs & the interior design.
-
Compost loo: Designing & building (& using!) a comfortable outdoor compost toilet for my family home. A simple system to minimise water use in the flush toilet & to minimize work. Earth care, People Care, Produce no waste,
-
Portfolio Design: Another planning & scheduling design, to help me to get to the interim assessment point of my diploma.
-
Skillshare Network: Designing & participating in a community skill share network which provided learning around practical skills & also nourished local permaculture related networking. People care, Integrate rather than segregate, Use & Value Diversity, Apply Self-regulation & accept feedback, Diversity, Succession,
-
Livelihood: While not a specific design, changes I have made & am planning to build my livelihood through Permaculture Design consultancy work, Teaching Permaculture & related subjects in various contexts & setting up a productive land-based site which will provide a livelihood for at least one person (myself) & also serve as a demonstration site. People care, Earth care, Obtain a Yield, Multiple functions, Multiple element
4: Learning from & Developing my Permaculure Practise:
-Evidenced by Observation & Documentation on each design that shows how I have measured & evaluated the performance & effectiveness of the design.
I have evaluated & reflected on each design in my portfolio using various evaluation tools. This evaluation & reflection has also included reflections on how my learning is progressing & how I have used lessons learnt in subseuent designs.
Designs which have been evaluated & in what way:
Interior Design: 6 Hats review
Perennial Dimension: 5 Action Learning Questions, & Evaluation against the functions of the design.
Incredible Edible: 4 Action Learning Questions, Input/Output analysis.
Food Garden: Evaluation against the functions of the design, & the three P's review.
Action Learning Pathway: PNI analysis & update on what actually happenned
Teaching design: 4 Action Learning Questions, & Self-Assessment using the "tutor assessment of individual design & feedback" form.
Portfolio Design: 4 Action Learning Questions, & Self-Assessment using the "tutor assessment of individual design & feedback" form.
Compost Loo: PNL (Positive, Negative, Learning), Costings, & Self-Assessment using the "tutor assessment of individual design & feedback" form
Community Skillshare Network: 6 Hats & Self-Assessment using the "tutor assessment of individual design & feedback" form
Sunflower social farm: 4 Action Learning Questions & PMI analysis.
-My overall portfolio with a final piece of relective writing (or other media) which shows how my learning has progressed & informed the next design opportunity.
My review of relevant activities covers this.
