 Interior - Reflection

I began the design process here, I used sort of a self-enquiry meditation to reflect on my current situation. I was housesitting for a couple of days so I created a quiet space where I could relax undisturbed & focus on feelings, thoughts & reactions stimulated by the question of 'what's going on with me'.

I intentionally kept the structure of this very loose so that it could be free flowing & emergent. I noted all my thoughts down in quite an unstructured mind map of self.

This process was quite calming & centring, it revealed information regarding helps & limits but most importantly at this stage led me to an expression of my vision for this design.

It could be considered equivalent to the 'Observation' stage in another design process framework.

Observe & Interact...

I used the Reflection anchor point many more times throughout the process, to check in with how things were going & clarify what the next steps could be both in terms of the design process & any action I was taking.

In this sense it was used as an ongoing journal.

Creatively use & respond to feedback...

Finally I returned full circle to the reflection anchor again for evaluation of the design, and the implementation & maintenance.

I'll be evaluating this design against the needs & tweaking in response to that feedback.

So there are two parts to this:

1. Personal: Ongoing evaluation & tweaking. This forms part of the action plan so more detail is in the Action anchor point.

2. Professional: Of the design once I 'finish' it (this design will never finished!!) once I have the design drawings, action & maintenance planners. -See below for more detail on this part.

Professional evaluation:

I didn't make measurable goals for this design so I cant evaluate it that way, so how can I best evaluate it?

It's a very heart centred design, it's about feelings, & my experience of life, but also about being productive & achieving certain things. So maybe the 6 hats would be the best evaluation tool in this case, it covers all bases!

White: Facts, Information, What information is missing? How can I get it?

Red: Gut feelings, What are my fears, likes & dislikes?

Black: Be pessmistic, What are the downsides & risks?

Yellow: Be optimistic, What are the benefits?

Green: Focus on alternatives, are there any new options? Any creative solutions or ideas? Opportunities?

Blue: Focus on control & Progression, Which hat do I wear & What else should I consider?

White: So the design is 'finished', I've used the Design Web & lots of tools to help me get to this point, I have a flexible design map together with a way to monitor & tweak the implementation. It's my final design in this diploma. It's taken about a month really to bring it all together (in between doing other things). I have already started doing many actions as a result of this design process including starting an Organic Market Gardening course, Booking a place on a 'Start your own business course', Regular meditation practise, Regular running, Being more involved in local events such as the seed keep, changing my phone 'package' so I can make more calls & communicate better with friends, family & allies, Money mapping, & more...

Red: I feel that this design has been very worthwhile, I feel much better equipped to make decisions that affect my future, I feel clearer about what I'm doing & why, I feel I've got to know myself better in the process. I feel excited about using this design, & I also feel a bit apprehensive about branching out. As regards the quality of the design I feel quite happy & confident with it, especially since it will be an ongoing thing that is flexible & can be adapted. It was  treat for me to be able to explore really what or, how I want to be in this world, focussing in a heart centred design rather than what I'm going to do & achieve (though this does also form part of the design) I feel more confident, capable & I know myself better. I feel like what was stuck is coming unstuck. I also forsee this course snowballing. I feel that although there is a risk of going back, the things pulling me forward are stronger.

Black: I did alot of assessing & evaluating throughout the process & I wasn't able to work in everything to the final design, for example the sphere's of influence & concern which I explored, although there implicitly could be more explicit. I'd like to have had a clearer plan of how I was going to expand my sphere of influence. It was a bit difficult to write this design up as there were so many thought processes behind it & also using the web form meant I jumped around alot so representing this in an clear way was a challenge. I didn't make any measurable goals which I'm sure could be seen as a downfall of this design, how can I tell if it's working, it could be all placebo & no permaculture!

Yellow: Using the web design process really suited this design, A balance of drawing & sketching with computer worked well, I used many tools in the process, especialy in my exploration of patterns, It was good to do a zone 00 design, I learnt alot about myself and even before really implementing the main parts of thed esign I've become more self aware & that in itself affects my actions. The design provides support for me going forward beyond the diploma. The learning around the 4 quadrants has really stuck with me & I think it will greatly help in future actions in many contexts. I liked the immediacy of the design seeing as it was a zone 00 project I could impliment as I went along. Pulling in tools from other contexts like the Action Planning technique gave me some new approaches. Strangely it was in this design that I really learnt the value of 'creating the right soil conditions for the plants to flourish', focussing in the supports as much as, if not more than the 'main' characters. This is something I'll bring to future work.

Green: I'd like to just use the design for a while & see how I get on before giving new options & ideas, I suppose for now I could revisit the sphere's of influence & concern & see if I am working in sync with my aim to increas emy sphere of influence. I could also try to refine the needs to be more measurable & specific, In this context this would need to entail afew more designs, (for example a livelihood design, a transport design etc)

Blue: I tend to wear the black hat alot when reviewing my own work, despite in general wearing the green or yellow hats. And although I wear the red hat alot I don't trust it. White hat evades me at times & at times I avoid it, there's just too much 'information' too many things to consider that sometimes I just have to make a decision based on the Red hat rather than try to untangle all the threads of the White hat.

Maybe I should consider then trusting the red hat more, and also getting to know the white hat better so I can know when the black hat is playing fair & when it's worn by fear.
